A feature on Stoodio

Take a step into Susannah Law’s mind as you enter the capsule of vintage pieces that is ‘Stoodio’. The store, which may be a small space, is still filled to the absolute brim with unique vintage finds as well as jewellery, prints and press on nails created by local businesses.

There is not one place to look at in the store that feels dull, it is covered in eclectic and quirky decor, some of which came straight from the founder and owner – Susannah’s - childhood, such as the various bratz dolls that are hidden in the back of

the store. If this isn’t enough to keep you browsing and buying, the atmosphere will, we had the pleasure to be greeted by Susannah herself, who took the time to give us the grand tour and answer my various questions. Later, one of the sales assistants at Stoodio arrived – Havia Finlay – and we truly began to settle in. Both Susannah and Havia made not only Nicky and I, but also the various customers feel at home in the store, which along with the cozy ambience and music nearly had me applying for a job. Stoodio truly feels like a fun sleepover that also happens to have an array of vintage pieces for you to peruse.

“It was just around Edinburgh, I feel like there wasn’t many places that had a fun sort of atmosphere, especially with vintage, like, I love all the aesthetics, but I feel like it was lacking some of that fun young nostalgic, but nostalgic for our generation kind of vibe”

Unfortunately, this fun and casual aesthetic sometimes comes with a price, Susannah told us about a recent incident that occurred in the store, which then led to a high media presence;

“...Recently a guy stole one of my rugby tops, and that went crazy viral”

In response to this theft, she put up a satirical post on Stoodio’s various social media accounts, showing the man stealing the top from the CCTV cameras, the post racked up over 240,000 views on TikTok, and many people came to the small businesses defence which was not only great for the marketing but also exposed the man publicly.

As Nicky and I inspected the hand selected vintage pieces – some of which we just couldn’t help but purchase – Susannah told us a bit more about the store and how she sources each piece.

“So, I handpick everything in here... I get everything from Italy and d France mainly, but I source from lots of suppliers that are based in the UK. In Italy and France, I either go over there and handpick, or I do facetime handpicking.”

Looking around Stoodio, the personal, handpicked feel really comes through. You can tell that Susannah truly takes the time to find the right pieces, not only that are her own style, but that are quintessential staples for anyones wardrobe, allowing whoever buys them first and foremost, give the piece a second life and secondly wear it over and over as a timeless classic, leaning into the anti-consumerism that vintage stores like Stoodio stand behind.
